The Era of Work Management

For years, companies have been investing heavily into project management solutions. More often than not, these investments have become failures due to a few misconceptions as to what it takes to succeed with a project management solution.
Now, a new era is beginning. The company I work for, Clarizen, is now introducing the world of Work Management solutions. What is the difference? Here we go:
In order to succeed in implementing any kind of new information system in a company, there needs to be an inherent value proposition to the system. In the past few years new expectations have arisen from companies where the understanding that the most valuable resource in a company is the employee, and unless a system can directly benefit the employee, it will prove to be very difficult to implement.
Most implementations fail due to lack of adoption by the team that is supposed to use the solution. The most common reasons for failure is that the employees fail to materialize the value and benefit of using a new system. I most cases, such a system only creates overhead for the users and only provide minor value to the company, creating a situation where the price of not using it is little and companies tend to easily give up on trying.
Work Management is the natural evolution of project management, with the main differentiators being that of putting the user in the center. A work management solution provides the end user a platform to plan, execute, collaborate and measure his work, thus driving adoption through team participation.
In a similar way in which SalesForce.com changes the way people use CRM from an analytical management reporting tool, to the main desktop application for Sales, Marketing and support people. Work Management creates a similar change in project management while leveraging on the fact that in project management, team collaboration is default, making the value proposition that much more powerful.
Another issue with project management tools is that they tend to ignore the day to day work that every emloyee of every company faces on a daily basis. Most people spend maybe 50% of their time working on project related tasks and the rest of the time work on ad-hoc assignments that are given to them to perform via email, meetings and so on. By ignoring this part of peoples work, project management solutions are ignoring the impact that this ad-hoc work has on a given employees projects and priorities.
A work management solution allows for any employee to manage his/hers assignments along side with their project tasks in a way that creates visibility and understanding as to the mutual impact that projects and other assignments have on each other. Allowing an employee to create his task/project list, collaborate and delegate planning and execution with his peers and gain visibility into the actual work and priorities, makes him a more intelligent part of the organization, allowing for better decision making and improved productivity throughout the company.
